Artificial intelligence built to perform one task or a narrow set of tasks, from spam filters to voice assistants. Every AI system deployed today is weak AI.
What is Weak AI?
Weak AI, also called narrow AI, is artificial intelligence built to perform one task or a narrow set of tasks. The contrast is with strong AI, or artificial general intelligence: a hypothetical system that could learn, reason, and adapt across any domain the way a person does.
The distinction sounds academic until you notice which side everything falls on. Every AI system in production today, large language models included, is weak AI; strong AI does not exist.
How Weak AI Works
A weak AI system is built around one objective and the data that serves it. A spam filter learns to separate junk from legitimate mail; a facial recognition system learns to match faces. Inside that boundary, performance can exceed any human’s.
Competence does not transfer. A chess engine that beats world champions cannot play checkers, and a model trained to spot tumors in X-rays knows nothing about MRI scans. The system has no understanding to fall back on when the task shifts, only a pattern fitted to its training set.
The boundary can be wide. A large language model handles translation, summarization, and code, which looks general – but that is breadth within text prediction, not the cross-domain adaptability that would make it strong AI.
Example of Weak AI
AlphaGo, the system DeepMind built to play the board game Go, beat world champion Lee Sedol four games to one in 2016. Go had resisted computers long after chess fell, and the win stunned the field.
Yet outside Go, AlphaGo could do nothing. It could not play chess, explain its strategy in words, or recognize a photograph of the board in front of it. That profile, world-best at one task and helpless outside it, is weak AI in its purest form.
