A data analyst collects, cleans, and analyzes data to answer business questions, then communicates the findings through reports and dashboards. Where a data scientist builds systems that predict, an analyst explains what the organization’s data already says.
It is the data role closest to the business: the questions come from managers, and the answers go back to them in plain language.
What a Data Analyst Does
The core toolkit is SQL to pull data from company databases, spreadsheets for quick work, and a BI tool such as Tableau or Power BI for dashboards. Analysts who handle larger or messier data add Python or R.
The deliverables fall into two kinds: recurring dashboards that executives check each morning, and one-off deep dives into questions like “why did signups drop in March?”, each starting with the same exploratory analysis of the underlying data. Specializations follow the business: financial analysts track revenue and risk, marketing analysts measure campaigns, operations analysts hunt inefficiencies.
Example of a Data Analyst
An analyst at an e-commerce company sees the weekly dashboard report a drop in completed checkouts. She queries the order database and segments the traffic by device and browser.
The drop turns out to be confined to mobile users on one browser, and it began the day a site update shipped. Her report quantifies the lost revenue per day and lands with the engineering team, which rolls back the change.
