AI Assessment

Last Updated: July 29, 2026 | By Mihail Sebastian | AI Dictionary

A structured evaluation of an AI system's capabilities, limitations, and risks: accuracy, fairness, robustness, and compliance with applicable law.

What is AI Assessment?

An AI assessment is a structured evaluation of an AI system’s capabilities, limitations, and risks, measured against qualities like accuracy, fairness, robustness, and compliance with the law.

Organizations run assessments internally and repeatedly: before deployment to decide whether a system is ready, and after deployment to check that it still behaves as expected. An assessment produces a picture of where the system stands; what the organization does with that picture is a separate decision.

How an AI Assessment Works

An assessment examines a system from several angles at once. Performance testing measures whether the model does its job: accuracy on held-out data, error rates, behavior on edge cases.

Bias analysis compares outcomes across demographic groups to catch disparities that aggregate numbers hide. Risk analysis asks what happens when the system fails, who gets hurt, and how badly.

A compliance check maps the system against the rules that apply to it, such as the EU AI Act for high-risk systems or sector regulations in finance and healthcare. A related exercise, the impact assessment, extends the view outward to the system’s effects on society.

The results feed decisions: fix the model, add human oversight, restrict the use case, or ship as planned. Because models drift and data changes, a serious assessment program repeats on a schedule rather than running once.

AI Assessment vs AI Audit

The practical difference: an assessment evaluates a system’s capabilities and risks, usually internally and on an ongoing basis, while an AI audit is a formal, independent examination against defined criteria. An assessment answers “how good and how risky is this system?”; an audit answers “does this system meet the standard it is required to meet?”.

Assessments inform engineering and deployment choices; audits produce evidence for regulators, customers, and boards. In practice, thorough internal assessments are what make an external audit survivable.

Example of an AI Assessment

A company plans to use an AI screening tool to rank job applicants, and its governance team assesses the tool before rollout. First, accuracy: does the tool’s ranking predict on-the-job performance better than the current process?

Second, disparate impact: the team compares selection rates across gender and ethnicity and finds the tool favors graduates of certain universities, a pattern that correlates with ethnicity. Third, legal exposure: recruitment is a listed high-risk use under the EU AI Act, and local anti-discrimination law applies regardless.

The assessment ends in a report with conditions: remove the university feature, put a human reviewer over every rejection, and re-assess after six months of live data.
