What is Agentic AI?
Agentic AI is artificial intelligence that pursues goals on its own: it plans, makes decisions, and takes actions without waiting for instructions at every step.
Where a chatbot answers the question you asked and stops, an agentic system can be handed an objective – “find and book the cheapest flight to Berlin next week” – and work through the steps itself: searching, comparing, deciding, booking.
The individual system doing this work is called an AI agent; “agentic AI” names the broader approach of building AI that operates this way.
Key Characteristics of Agentic AI
Four traits separate agentic systems from AI that merely responds to prompts: autonomy (it acts without a human approving each step), goal direction (it works toward an objective rather than answering one question at a time), adaptability (it changes course when the environment changes), and learning (it improves from its own experience, as in reinforcement learning).
Applications of Agentic AI
- Autonomous vehicles: A self-driving car is handed a destination, then plans the route, reads traffic, and makes thousands of driving decisions on its own.
- Robotics: Warehouse and delivery robots that pick their own paths and recover from obstacles without an operator stepping in.
- Virtual assistants: Systems that manage schedules or business processes end to end: not just setting the meeting you dictated, but finding the slot, inviting the attendees, and rescheduling when someone declines.
Example of Agentic AI
A smart home system shows agentic behavior at small scale. Told to keep the house comfortable and secure, it learns the household’s patterns, then acts on them: lowering the heat when everyone leaves, turning lights on before the usual arrival time, locking doors at night. Nobody issues those commands each time; the system pursues the standing goal on its own.

Generative AI produces content: text, images, or code, one response per prompt. Agentic AI pursues a goal through multiple steps and decides for itself what to do next. The two combine in practice, since many agents use a generative model as the engine that plans and reasons.
Is ChatGPT agentic AI?
In its basic form, no: a chatbot answers the prompt in front of it and stops. It becomes agentic when it is given tools and an objective and left to work through the steps itself, as in the agent modes built on top of large language models.
